Dear Bosconians and friends of DBA,

More than a century ago, a young priest had a dream that would change the lives of millions of children across the world. In that dream, a group of noisy, quarrelsome boys were transformed into gentle, responsible, and loving young people—not through force or fear, but through kindness, patience, and love. That young priest was St. John Bosco, affectionately known as Don Bosco, and his dream continues to inspire generations even today.

Don Bosco believed that every young person is a treasure waiting to be discovered. He saw beyond a child’s weaknesses and mistakes, recognizing the immense goodness and potential hidden within each heart. His unwavering faith in young people became the foundation of his life’s mission: to educate, guide, and empower them to become “good human beings and honest citizens.”

The world in which Don Bosco lived was filled with poverty, inequality, and uncertainty. Many young people were abandoned, uneducated, and without hope. Yet Don Bosco refused to believe that any child was beyond redemption. Instead, he created homes where children felt loved, schools where they could learn, playgrounds where they could laugh, and communities where they could grow in faith and character.

Today, although society has changed dramatically, the challenges facing young people remain real. Academic pressure, mental stress, social media influences, loneliness, and uncertainty about the future often weigh heavily on their minds. The heart of Don Bosco’s educational philosophy was his Preventive System, built on three simple yet powerful pillars: Reason, Religion, and Loving-Kindness. He believed that discipline rooted in understanding is more effective than punishment, that faith gives life meaning, and that genuine love opens hearts in ways that authority alone never can. These timeless principles continue to shape Salesian schools and educational institutions across the globe.

Perhaps the greatest tribute to Don Bosco is not found in statues, buildings, or celebrations. It is found in the lives of young people who dream boldly, work honestly, care deeply, and serve generously. Every student who discovers confidence after failure, every young leader who chooses integrity, every volunteer who reaches out to someone in need, and every graduate who uses education to build a better society carries forward Don Bosco’s dream.

The dream also calls each young person to become a dream-maker for others. Don Bosco never wanted his students merely to succeed for themselves. Don Bosco once said, “It is enough that you are young for me to love you very much.” Those words continue to echo across generations. They remind every young person that they are valued, capable, and deeply loved.
